Stokes was a classroom teacher for 17 years, mostly in Title I Schools, and was voted Educator of the Year. He served as Principal of Washington Carver, Sutton, and Westview Elementary schools, all in Muncie. In 2004, Stokes was hired as Principal of Martha B. King Middle School here in Bradenton, where he was highly regarded by parents and staff alike. Stokes was promoted to Director of Elementary Education for Manatee County Schools in 2009. After five years, he chose to return to a Title I school in order to work together with the faculty, staff, and students of Samoset Elementary in raising their failing school grade. Three years later, Samoset’ school letter grade was up two grades and Stokes retired in June of 2016.
