Elizabeth McGowen Watkins began preparing to be the Clerk before she was born.
Her Jefferson County roots run deep. Elizabeth’s maternal grandfather was a steel worker at U.S. Steel. Her paternal grandfather was a local aviation worker. Her mother, Judy, is a former employee of the Jefferson County Clerk's Office, while her father, John, is a retired Jefferson County employee, who served the citizens of our community for thirty years.
Judy met John at the Jefferson County Courthouse in 1978. Seriously.
In 1982, when she was one-week-old, an ice storm closed Jefferson County roads, and left her parents without power or a way to heat her bottles. Thankfully, deputies from the Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to their home in Hueytown, and the family was rescued. Her mother insists that those deputies saved their lives.
Elizabeth is a graduate of Hueytown High School and Birmingham-Southern College, and received her Paralegal Certificate from Samford University. She began her career at Bradley, Arant, Boult, Cummings, LLP, where she assisted with the civil trial of Richard Scrushy. After spending several years as an in-house corporate paralegal, she got into the “family business” of public service. Elizabeth has served the residents of Jefferson County as the Civil Paralegal for the District Attorney’s Office since 2014. This unique position is a blend of both civil matters and criminal cases, making her one of a few individuals familiar with the operations of the Clerk's Office on both sides of the street.
As a result of her diverse experience, Elizabeth is qualified, and prepared to build upon the amazing legacy of our previous Clerks. As a life-long Democrat, she is also aware of the challenges that face the voters of Jefferson County.
Elizabeth and her husband James, who was also born and grew up in Jefferson County, have been married for five years. They live in Hoover with their daughter, the campaign’s “Team Toddler,” and a ten-year-old dachshund named Gus.
